Parents killed in car accident leave 4 daughters behind

A family who had just relocated from Maryland to Florida suffered a devastating loss in a car accident in Jacksonville. The tragic car accident left four girls parentless, as both of the adults were killed in the collision. To make matters worse, the girls' maternal grandparents had already lost two other children to car accidents.

The collision occurred on Aug. 14 at about 10:15 p.m., when the two adults were struck while riding together on a motorcycle. The victims, a 29-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man, were struck by a van driven by a local resident. That 50-year-old man may have been intoxicated at the time of the collision.

The at-fault driver has left four girls from the ages of 8 to 13 without their parents. Those girls' maternal grandparents buried their first child in 2001, when their son died at age 17 in a car accident. Another crash claimed the life of another son in 2009. This collision marks the death of their third child. The two parents are characterized as loving, happy people who loved their children and each other deeply. The couple had met while they were still teenagers; they married after experiencing "love at first sight," according to the woman's parents.

Authorities say that toxicology reports are still pending in the matter. Those reports will determine whether the driver is charged with crimes related to intoxicated driving. Even if the at-fault driver was not drunk at the time of the crash, he could still face criminal and civil liability for his role in the accident. Such drivers may be held responsible for a variety of civil claims after this type of tragic accident. Remuneration may include compensation for pain and suffering and medical expenses, among others.
