Preventing an injury to a child in Maryland

It is very important for parents in Maryland to know what they can do to reduce the risk of their child being injured in the home. If you’re trying to make your home as safe of a place as possible, you should start by eliminating fall risks, seeing as how falls lead the way when it comes to visits to the emergency room. This is why gates near stairs and other such areas are so important.

This also goes for activities that your child engages in outside of the house, however. For instance, a fall could take place at a playground, on a jungle gym or a slide. You want to make sure that any places you take your child are as safe as possible, with things like rubber surfaces and ground-level toys.

On top of that, you need to be wary of your surroundings when running errands. If a child is in a shopping cart, the safety restraint should definitely be used. If you are using an escalator or another device that the child may not be familiar with, stay close and hold your child’s hand. Always teach your children about safety in parking lots, which often amounts to slowing down and watching for cars at all times.

Finally, when children are playing, you should make them use safety gear. A helmet can save a child’s life when he or she is biking, skateboarding or riding a scooter.

Of course, even doing all of this does not mean your child will never be injured, as some things are out of your control. To find out what legal options you may have, please check out our personal injury site as soon as you can.
