Latest Maryland workers' compensation injury statistics

If you feel like you are the only one you know who has suffered a workplace injury, know that you are not alone. Indeed, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 67,000 people suffered from workplace injuries in 2013 alone, and these are just the injuries that were reported. Many of these individuals might have applied to receive workers' compensation benefits. If you are also an injured worker, you may be able to qualify for benefits as well.

In 2013, approximately 2.3 million individuals were covered by Maryland's workers' compensation system. Out of every 100 of these full-time workers, approximately 3.4 suffered an illness or injury in 2013. That represents a figure that is 3 percent under the national average, which was 3.5 in 2013. As for serious injuries that required spending time unable to work, about 1.5 of every 100 workers suffered such an injury in 2013.

These survey results were produced by the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. The survey is carried out by Maryland's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Division of Labor and Industry. The estimates are complied after reviewing health and safety logs that all employers must maintain.

If you or your loved one has suffered a workplace injury, help may be available through the Maryland state workers' compensation system. In many cases, injured workers can quickly obtain benefits to pay for medical care necessary for their recoveries. It may also be possible to pursue benefits that help an injured worker replace lost income during time spent unable to work.
